Few places makes you slow down and feel so connected to nature as effortlessly as in the southern Italian region of Puglia.
The fascination for a slow-paced life and the closeness to nature became fundamental to the transformation of this century-old olive grove into a unique, peaceful retreat.
Puglia, traditionally a farming region, has become a favoured destination for those seeking an authentic travel experience. Only a few years ago that was not yet reality, and so the restoration of an abandoned olive grove on the outskirts of Ostuni started off as something of a concept in the making. It took months and years of pruning century-old olive trees and cacti, and of repurposing barren land into lavender fields and wild meadows, before the results slowly but surely took shape.
The process of restoring the farmland, became a search for a more meaningful and natural way of living, and that purpose has gradually led to the creation of a living, organic farm.
Striving to minimise waste from the restoration, the idea formed to use produce from the farm to develop natural skincare. That way, ashes from the wood and oils from olives, almonds and lavender were turned into the farm’s own handmade skincare that now may be enjoyed by farm guests.
A few years ago, the first, tiny animals were introduced to the farm – its very own honey bees. Guided and helped by an amazing beekeeping mentor, four bee hives were set up in front of the lavender field and each spring and summer produce nutritious, healing organic honey. Interested visitors may book a honey tour to learn more about these fascinating small creatures and their work.
After years of farmland restoration, the development of the farm houses began. And with that, years of sketching, planning and seemingly endless building works and pitfalls, but also moving and unforeseen blessings of helping hands and invaluable support from friends near and far.
